NDIS and Supported Independent Living

Supported Independent Living

NDIS and Supported Independent Living

Supported independent living is the service in which the NDIS funds supports disabled people to help them live a normal life as independently as possible.

Osan Ability assist’s SIL accommodation support is for people who need round-the-clock support while living in a shared house.

OSAN ABILITY provides modern shared homes in the best neighbourhood areas with the best Support Workers on hand 24/7 for NDIS members with Supported Independent Living (SIL) funding.

Keep reading below to learn about five key benefits of Supported Independent Living:

1. Becoming independent

Moving into a space of your own allows you to make more self decisions and live the life you chose. But what if you need support to live independently?

OSAN ABILITY provides experienced and trained staff who can support you with:

  • Personal care, including showering and dressing
  • Everyday using life skills such as cooking, cleaning, gardening, and doing laundry
  • Support in budgeting and household management
  • Development of social and communication skills
  • Overnight support (sleepover or active overnight)

When you live in SIL, you can have freedom when you want it and someone will be prepared when you need support. And, of course, your family and friends can come to visit you at any time!

2. Making new friends

One of the pleasures of moving is the chance to widen your social circle. Challenge understands that living with other people is a great way to make new friends, therefore we try to match you to other house members who are of an equivalent age and have shared interests.

OSAN ABILITY shared homes often contain common facilities like the kitchen, living room, laundry, and outdoor entertaining area. Sharing common areas with other house members means that you will get a lot of chances to be social in your everyday life.

3. More opportunities

A move into a new home implies choice and new opportunities. Maybe you wish to move closer to where you work or places you attend day programs, or where you engage in entertainment or activities?

This is a moment for you to think about what is important to you and analyse which options might make your life simpler or more rewarding.

4. Freedom and safety

Balancing between autonomy and safety is essential to everyone. While you will share the common spaces with the other members, your bedroom will be your space. You will have every right to decorate or arrange things the way you like them.

At least one support worker is on-site 24/7 to give support to the house members. OSAN ABILITY’s staff are trained and professional in reacting to emergencies and ensuring the safety of the house members, so you can enjoy your freedom knowing that support is close to hand.

5. Support is there when you need it

While you may be looking ahead to your new place and freedom, you could also be feeling a bit nervous about being without your family or carer.

Everyone who moves out of their home requires time to improve their life skills and confidence. OSAN ABILITY’s staff are there not only to help you with useful tasks but also to listen to you, understand what is necessary to you and help you reach your life goals.

NDIS provides funding for these services and you can contact an NDIS approved provider like OSAN to make sure that you or your loved one is getting these services. If you have any questions regarding any of the mentioned topics, contact OSAN ABILITY to discuss your situation and how you can get the help you need.
