Will the NDIS Fund My Holiday? Everything You Need to Know

NDIS Holiday

The NDIS is a scheme that provides support for people with disabilities, however, one of the most common questions that many have is whether or not the NDIS will fund a holiday? In this blog, we’ll answer that question and provide you with some great tips that will help you be more prepared for accessing support during your next holiday. We also tell you everything you need to know about travelling with the NDIS and what you may be entitled to when it comes to funding.

Will the NDIS Fund My Holiday?

One of the key determining factors when it comes to accessing NDIS funding is the support you’re receiving must meet the ‘reasonable & necessary’ criteria. While everyone deserves a holiday and should have time to unwind and relax, a holiday isn’t specifically classified as necessary by the NDIS. This means that the NDIS will not exactly fund your holiday, however, you will likely be able to access funding for the support you may require during your vacation if it supports your goals outlined in your NDIS plan.

What Will the NDIS Actually Fund During My Holiday?

It’s a priority before any holiday that you have a meeting with your Support Coordinator & Plan Manager to discuss in advance what support you may need during your trip. This is the best way to avoid any surprises or issues when you’re trying to access funding for your holiday. Generally, the NDIS will work on assisting in providing you with the necessary funding for you to have an enjoyable and safe trip. Some examples of the support you may be able to access during your trip include:

  • You may be able to bring along a Support Worker during your trip to provide you with any necessary support. Under the ‘reasonable & necessary’ criteria, your plan manager may suggest having a Respite Carer that lives in the area you’re holidaying. Having your regular Carer could incur a significant added cost, taking into account transport there and back from the holiday destination.
  • You may need an accessible vehicle to get out and about. If you don’t own an accessible vehicle, your Plan Manager may be able to organise funding for you to hire one during your stay.
  • Hiring mobility equipment while in your apartment or out and about so you can still get usual tasks like grocery shopping done or attending community events.
  • In some instances, you may be able to claim transport assistance. If you require regular transport assistance that’s more expensive due to your disability, this may be funded as part of your NDIS plan.
  • In some instances, you may be able to claim transport assistance. If you require regular transport assistance that’s more expensive due to your disability, this may be funded as part of your NDIS plan.
  • You may even be able to claim funding for tours during your stay. Tours are a great way to engage in the community and most importantly develop your social skills so it’s likely the NDIS will provide funding for this.
