Aged Care Support Services for the Independent Elderly

Aged care

There is a range of aged care support services available for the elderly at home in Australia. These services can help with everyday tasks such as shopping, cooking and cleaning, and providing more personalised care and support.

Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP)

The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) is a government-funded program that provides a range of services to help older Australians stay independent and live at home for longer. Services available through the CHSP include domestic assistance, personal care, social support and transport.

Home Care Packages

Home Care Packages are designed to provide a coordinated package of care and support services to help older Australians who need some assistance to stay living at home. There are four levels of Home Care Packages, each providing a different level of support depending on an individual’s needs.

Aged Care Assessment Teams

Aged Care Assessment Teams (ACATs) assess the care needs of older Australians and provide information and advice on the range of aged care services available. ACATs can also provide access to government-funded aged care services, such as Home Care Packages and the Commonwealth Home Support Programme.

Respite Care

Respite care is a type of short-term care that can be used to give carers a break from their caring role. Respite care can be provided in the home, in a day centre or in an aged care home. It can be arranged for a few hours, a day, overnight or for a longer period.

There is a range of other services available to support older Australians living at home, including meals on wheels, social clubs and activities, and home maintenance services. For more information about the services available in your area, contact your local Council on the Ageing (COTA).

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels provides a hot meal service for people who are unable to cook for themselves. Meals are prepared fresh daily and delivered to people’s homes by volunteers. Meals on Wheels also provides frozen meal service for those who prefer this option.

Residential Aged Care

Residential aged care is for older people who can no longer live independently at home and need more care than can be provided by family and friends. Residential aged care facilities provide 24-hour care and support, including meals, nursing care and personal care.

Retirement Villages

Retirement villages provide housing and support services for people who are aged 55 and over. They often include a range of facilities, such as swimming pools, recreation areas, libraries and community centres.

Transport Services

Transport services can provide assistance for older people who are unable to use public transport or do not have access to a car. Transport services can help people to get to doctor’s appointments, the shops and social activities.
