You’ve no doubt heard of the NDIS since it began rolling out in 2016, but what is it and how can you participate? Learn the important things you need to know here, so you can get the ball rolling on your own application.
What Is the NDIS?
If you or someone in your family has a disability, the NDIS is the government’s new way of giving you and them support in day-to-day life. If you are accepted into the scheme, you will get help with:
- Using support services, like doctors, teachers and public housing
- Using community support services and activities, like sports clubs and libraries
- Making the most of support from family and friends
- Arranging professional support people to help you in the ways you need it.
How Much Funding Will I Receive?
The NDIS pays for support that is tailored to your own needs, so each person’s level of funding and support is different. That’s why a big part of the process is creating an individual plan that details your goals and specific needs.
The NDIS provides money to help improve your situation but, more importantly, your NDIS coordinator provides advice and information, plus they help you connect with people or services that can help you.
Am I eligible for the NDIS?
If you have a disability, you may be eligible to become an NDIS participant and start receiving necessary support. The first step is checking the following:
- Is the Scheme available where you live?
- Are you under 65 and do you fit within the age group for your area?
- Are you an Australian citizen or hold an appropriate visa?
- Does your disability meet the NDIS requirements?
- Will early intervention now help you in the future?
How Do I Apply for the NDIS?
If you are eligible for the NDIS, simply complete an access request form. You will be asked to provide evidence of your disability and how it affects your daily life. Once the NDIA has received your completed form, you can expect to hear from them within 21 days.
What Happens Next?
Once you become an NDIS participant, you will have an interview with someone at the NDIA. They will speak with you and/or your chosen nominee about your current situation to help determine what sort of support you may need through the NDIS. You will talk about:
- your needs
- your existing support
- your goals for the future.
